The most effective web design involves in choosing the keywords and keyword phrases first and then designing the website around them. Yet most designers and their clients insist on choosing keywords last!

Why web design backwards? Because search engines judge and rank your site on the basis of keywords and keyword phrases. Choose the right keywords and use them right, and you will get high search engine listings and high visitor traffic. Without high visitor traffic your web site is bound to fail.

For web design - what are 'right' keywords?

To be able to select the right keywords for your web design you need to get yourself deep into the brain of a typical member of your target market.
 
What words or phrases would Mr, Mrs, or Ms Searcher use in trying to find a web site offering your product, service or idea on the Internet?

 
Imagine you own a guest house called Anny's Hideaway. Would your would-be guests be searching for Anny. If they were, they probably would not be looking for what you have to offer! Would they be searching for Anny's Hideaway? Not unless they had heard of your establishment and had remembered how to spell your name!
 
Words and phrases like guest house, accomodation, bed and breakfast, country lodge, and words that describe your location, or what you have to offer (fishing, tennis, bowls, yachting, gourmet meals, great wines, fireside chats?) are more likely to connect you to your target market.

Wrap your web design around keywords

Your keywords should not be an afterthought,
to be selected AFTER your web site has been
designed and your copy written.
 
For best results - do it backwards!

keywords and not the other way round.

Selecting best keywords and phrases

The best web design keywords and phrases have three characterists:

They aptly apply to your site and would be used by searchers from your target market (never try to appeal to all 200 million web users. Always focus on your your target market.
 
They are searched for often but are not too general - for example 'suite' is too general for a guest house. "Honeymoon suite" would be better.
 
They have a low supply compared to demand. WOT's THAT? Frequently searched for (demand), but search engines offer relatively few results (demand).
